YMCA Swim Lessons
The purpose of our swim lesson
program is to develop competency in swimming, along with confidence and
endurance. Each child is different and will progress at their own pace.
Please provide goggles for your child for the following levels: Guppy, Minnow,
Fish, Flying Fish and Shark. For more information, please contact the
Aquatic Department.
Policy for Missed Classes/Make-Ups
In order to keep our class fees as
low as possible, we will not be able to issue credit for missed classes or
activities (even if they occur due to inclement weather). Make-ups are not
available to swimming class participants because of the program design.

Y Swim Lesson Class Descriptions, Days & Times
Offered
Water Babies (Parent-Tot, ages 6 mos-3 yrs.)
The class objectives are to introduce infants 6 months to 3 years
with parents/adults to the aquatic environment. We want to provide a
positive parent-child experience while teaching aquatic safety. Diaper age
children must wear a swim diaper AND bathing suit. A parent or trusted
adult must attend class with the child.

Pike/Eel (3-5 yrs.)
This class offers 3-5 year olds the opportunity to explore the aquatic
environment, adjust to a group setting and to move through the water
independently with the support of an instructional floatation device. The
Eel class will help children improve their independence and confidence while
learning to swim distances.

Ray/Starfish
This class is great for children 3-5 years
old with some swimming experience. They will start learning
rhythmic breathing and fine tune both front and back crawl strokes.
Children enrolling in RAY/STARFISH should have passed EEL or be
able to swim at least 15 feet with both front and back crawl strokes.
Comfort in deep water and able to swim distances required.

Polliwog/Guppy (6-12 yrs.)
Polliwog is an introductory level class for
children ages 6-12 years old. Children will learn basic pool safety as
well as beginner swimming skills and self-confidence. Guppies will
continue their front and back crawl strokes as well as improve their endurance.
Comfort in deep water is necessary!

Minnow/Fish (6-12 yrs.)
Minnows will fine tune their front and back
crawl strokes and start exploring the breaststroke and sidestroke. Minnow
participants must have passed Guppy or be able to swim one length using front
and back crawl strokes as well as tread water for 30 seconds. Fishes will
learn all four competitive strokes and swim longer distances. They must be
proficient in the front crawl stroke, backstroke and the basics of the
breaststroke.

Flying Fish/Shark (6-12 yrs.)
Flying Fish will master the four competitive
strokes. Endurance, including swimming distances, will be emphasized.
Class is a great introduction to competitive swimming and a good workout for
those who don't want to compete. Sharks will continue to master the four
competitive strokes as well as learn advanced swimming skills. Basic
lifeguard and first aid skills will be introduced.

Adult Swim Lessons (Age 13 and up)
You are never too old to learn how to swim.
Class is designed for adults who are ready to overcome their fear of the water
or never got around to learning how to swim. We will teach you aquatic
skills and personal water safety in a comfortable atmosphere.

Private Swim Lessons
We offer private swim lessons for swimmers who are a little timid
in groups or just want to practice certain skills. This program consists
of 6 half hour one-on-one lessons with an instructor. Once payment is
received, the lessons will be scheduled.

Want to work on an aquatic badge or
just want some aquatic fun? Give us a call and we will help
your troop accomplish your water goals.

Swim Club
This program gives swimmers ages 7-15 the opportunity to sustain endurance
levels and enhance skills in a noncompetitive environment. Swimmers have
the option to come either 2 or 3 days a week.

Y-Water Exercise Class Registration Procedures
Water Exercise Classes are included with all YMCA memberships at no charge.
The option is still available for Program Members to take classes for a monthly
fee. This monthly fee also includes any land exercise classes.

Aquacize
This class is designed for individuals seeking a moderate to advanced low impact
exercise class for the total body that does not stress the joints. This
class emphasizes fat burning, cardiovascular exercise and cardio-respiratory
improvement. It will increase flexibility, muscle strengthening, muscle
toning and endurance.

Monday/Wednesday/Friday 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Deep Water Aerobics
This class is designed for individuals seeking a total body, non-impact, deep
water exercise program. It emphasizes joint flexibility, range of motion
and muscle toning through specific exercises. This is great for arthritis
sufferers to athletes. Participants must be comfortable in deep water!

Intense Water Aerobics
Intended for those seeking a great cardio workout! Using both the deep and
shallow ends, we will work on fat burning, muscle toning and flexibility.
Exercises are low impact and high resistance, which is easy on the joints.
Floating barbells will be used for resistance. Heart rates will be
monitored. Excellent swim skills are NOT required as participants wear
swim belts.

Water Exercise Class
Class is designed for individuals seeking a low impact exercise
class that focuses on mobility, agility and movement. Class begins with a
warm-up followed by mild aerobics, stretching, balancing, isometric and isotonic
exercises and cool down activities.

Y-Milers
"Can you go the distance?" This year we will continue to track our laps as
we swim along the Chesapeake Bay. The Y Milers will enjoy a 200 mile
stroll (which is 14,200 laps) along the body of water that separates the
Delmarva Peninsula from the the mainland of Maryland and Virginia. The
English colonist John Smith explored and chartered the Chesapeake Bay in 1608.
Come in and swim when it is convenient for you and track your laps. which will
be converted into miles.
Lifeguard Prep
Are you interested in becoming a lifeguard? The class is designed to
prepare you mentally and physically to take the American Red Cross Lifeguarding
Course. It will provide individuals a chance to practice the skills
necessary to become a certified lifeguard. Participants must be strong
swimmers. Participating in this course does not guarantee becoming a
certified lifeguard. A minimum of 6 people are necessary for the class to
run.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Class
This course provides the knowledge and skills needed to certify an individual to
be an American Red Cross Lifeguard. Participants must be 15 years of age
or older to pass a 500 yd swim test as well as other skills on the first night
of class in order to participate. You must attend all classes.
Participants must bring proof of age, swimsuit, towel, pen/pencil and paper to
class. This class includes Lifeguard (current 3 years), First Aid (current
3 years), CPR for the Professional Rescuer (current 1 year) and Automatic
External Defibrillator (current 1 year). A minimum of 6 people are
necessary for the class to run. A $20.00 non-refundable deposit is due at
registration with the remainder of the registration fee due upon completion of
the pre-course test on the first night.

ARC Lifeguard Recertification Course
Participants can recertify in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR
for the Professional Rescuer. Must show current lifeguarding, CPR for the
Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications on the first night of class.
Students are required to pass the pre-course swim. Students must supply
their own books, pocket masks, swimsuit, towel, pen/pencil and notepad to all
classes. Class will run in conjunction with our complete Lifeguarding
course. All lifeguards looking to recertify must attend the first night of
the new Lifeguarding course because a schedule will be presented to them.
A minimum of 4 students are necessary for the class to run.

ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer
Recertification Course
This course will recertify participants in American Red Cross CPR for the
Professional Rescuer. Current certifications must be shown upon
registering for the class. This class will be run in conjunction with our
Lifeguarding course. Please contact the Aquatics Department for session
dates and times.

Lower Shore Family YMCA
Pool Rules |
| Lifeguards are in charge of the
pool area and will enforce all rules. |
| Children ages 12 and under must
be accompanied by an adult. |
| Children wearing floatation
devices must have a parent in the water within arms reach at all times. |
| No running, horse playing or
flips. |
| Non-swimmers with floatation
devices will not be permitted in the deep end. |
| No class containers on deck. |
| Swimsuits are required, no
cut-offs or street clothes. |
| Diaper-aged children must wear
a swim diaper and a bathing suit. |
| No diving, twisting, flipping,
gymnastic stunts or jumping into the pool backwards from the side of the
pool. |
| A monthly schedule is available
at the front desk, stating when open, lap and family swim times are
permitted. |
Rentals
The Lower Shore Family YMCA is available for your group to rent.
Activities include use of the gym, indoor pool, outdoor pavilion and Challenge
Course. We also provide the opportunity for groups to conduct overnight
activities. For availability, including dates and fees, please call the
YMCA.
